Thomas Gainsborough was an English portrait and landscape painter, printmaker, and draughtsman. In the second half of the 18th century, he was also known as one of the most important British artists and the rival of English painter or portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds. His works are characterized by a light palette, quick paintings, and easy strokes. His life:

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, England, on 14 May 1727. He was the youngest son of John Gainsborough, who was a woolen goods maker and weaver. He spent most of his childhood days at Gainsborough Street, Sudbury. Presently, it is known as a house museum. His interest in painting and drawing was started with impressing his father.

In 1740, he left his home to study art in London. In London, he had taken training from French engraver Hubert Gravelot. However, he becomes influenced by the school of English painter William Hogarth.

 

His Career:

In 1746, Thomas Gainsborough got married to Margaret Burr. At that time, his paintings were not selling well. When he was in Suffolk, he painted the Rev. John Chaffy Playing a Violoncello in a Landscape established between 1750 to 52. Now, this can be seen at Tate Gallery, London. Later, he painted a self-portrait, The Artist's Daughters, and Margaret Burr. 

Next, he moved to Bath with his family in 1759. Here, he submitted his works in the Royal Academy's annual exhibitions, which boosted his growth and generated a reputation. In 1774, he again moved to London with his family to explore his work skill.
