Edouard Vuillard

Edouard Vuillard (1868 – 1940) was a famous printmaker, decorative artist, and French painter. He was very much influenced by Japanese prints and learned about blended patterns and colors. He was also a prominent member of the Nabis from 1891 to1900, where he was making assembled paintings of interior scenes and pure color.

He was also good at designing plates and stained glass, panels for interior decoration, painting theater sets, and making decorative arts. When the Nabis broke up at the last of 1900, Edouard Vuillard had adopted vivid colors, and lavish detail work in his painting landscapes, realistic style, and interiors. He developed his artistic work in familiar settings. Moreover, he painted portraits of many prominent figures in the 1920s and 1930s in the French industry. Our popular canvas art paintings shop is famous for  famous Artists  art and  their Museum quality  paintings

His Early Life:

Edouard Vuillard was born on 11 November 1868 in Cuiseaux, Saone-et-Loire, France. In this place, he spends his young age too. He was a retired captain's son. In modest circumstances, he moved to Paris with his family in 1878.

In 1884, he lost his father, and his demises had made him take responsibility for his family. In the same year, he received a scholarship for his education, continuing it further. In the Lycee Condorcet, he met musician Pierre Hermant, Maurice Denis, writer Pierre Veber and Ker Xavier Roussel (Vuillard's future brother-in-law and painter). He was very much influenced by the Louvre and used to visit almost regularly. This had made him become an artist rather than joining the army. Through this, he had broken his family tradition of working for the army.

His Early Training:

In 1885, Edouard Vuillard decided to leave the Lycee Condorcet. After that, he got connected to the Roussel at the painter Diogène Maillart studio. Here, he and Roussel gained the proper artistic training. Next, he joined the Academie Julian in March 1886 and learned many skills from Tony Robert-Fleury. He also met Pierre Bonnard, and both of them planned to share a studio of art.

In July 1886, he cleared the Ecole des Beaux-Arts entrance examination, where he wanted to join eagerly and tried three attempts to clear the exam. In 1888, he had taken guidance from Jean-Leon Gerome for about six weeks. He started to keep a journal where he included his Louvre studied ideas and future painting ideas sketches. Here, he tried to draw the domestic interiors and realistic study of still life. Along with this, he has also had an interest in Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin's works and the works of 17th-century Dutch artists. From 1888 to 1905 and 1907 to 1940, he kept his private worked journal.

His Famous and Notable work:

Edouard Vuillard’s best-known works includes Figures dans un Interieur (Figures in an Interior), and the Les Jardins Publiques (The Public Gardens). In this work, he had the freedom to select the style and subjects. Vuillard had contributed eight cycles of decorative paintings between 1892 and 1899, including some thirty panels. Among these, Public Gardens is a series of six panels. This work is showing children in the Paris parks with a variety of unique inspirations. For this work, Vuillard did not include the oil paint but used a different Peinture a la colle. He believed this method works very quickly to make the modifications. On 24 August 1894, he received the commission, and he finished the series in the same year. At that time, these works were decorated at the salon or dining room of the Natansons. Here are some of the famous series of The Public Gardens:

  • Public Gardens - The two schoolboys: It was published in 1894. And, it can be found at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
  • Public Gardens - Girls playing: This fine work can be seen at Paris, Musee d'Orsay, which was published in 1894.
  • The Public Gardens - The Nurses (left), The conversation (center), The Red Umbrella (right): This painting was a decorative screen, which was published in 1894. Also, it can be found in Paris, Musee d'Orsay.
  • Public Gardens – Questions: This work was published in 1894. And, it can be found in Paris, Musee d'Orsay.

Vuillard had also given more focus to the interior scenes in his paintings. His interior painting usually contains women in a garden, in a workplace, or at home. They were dominated and highly focused by the bold patterns of the wallpaper, the costumes, furnishings, and carpets. Here, he rarely used the women's features and faces as the center of attention. In 1894, he mentioned in his journal that he could only see gross caricatures while giving attention to males, but in the case of women, he found that element of isolation that he wants in his painting. Here are some of the series of figures in an Interior:

  • La Robe A Ramages: This painting is showing the floral dress that was published in 1891. And, it can be found at the Sao Paulo Museum of Art.
  • The Seamstress with Chiffons: This painting was published in 1893. Presently, it can be seen at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
  • Three women in conversation: This notable painting shows a strong conversation between three women, which was painted in 1893.
  • Le corsage raye: This painting was painted in 1895. Presently, it can be found at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
  • Persons in an interior – Music: This painting was published in 1896. It was decorative panel work.
  • Persons in an Interior – Intimacy: This painting was published in 1896, and it is a decorative panel work.
  • Large Interior with Six Persons: This painting had included six persons. It was painted in 1897. Presently, this notable work can be found at Kunsthaus Zurich.
  • In the Waiting Room: This painting shows some people in the waiting room, which was published in 1898. Presently, this painting can be seen at The Thiel Gallery, Stockholm.
